Petra is a virtual world game that takes your child on adventures around the world where they discover different regions, cultures, indigenous animals and landscapes through sight, sound and a variety of educational games like memory, puzzles, trivia, card collecting and much more.
Educational Aspects
Geography - Clicking on a region on the globe, whisks the child away on a plane with Petra to that region where the child can explore different aspects of the region.
Social Studies - The landscape, the culture, the dress and even the music changes depending on where the child visiting. For example, Middle Eastern music plays the child is in the appropriate region.
Cognitive Skills - Within each region, children will encounter different games like memory, matching, trivia and puzzles. There is quite a variety and the child enjoys finding these games that are hidden in each region.
Animal Studies - Children are encouraged to click on the indigenous animals of the regions and to collect animal cards. The cards teach the child about various traits of the animal. In order to collect more cards, the child needs to guess the correct answer in a comparison type trivia question between two animals.
Hand Eye Coordination - Children are encouraged to decorate their room and change their outfit. Moving items around with a mouse and placing them in the designated areas encourage hand eye coordination.
Typing Skills - Children are presented with friend requests from other players and they can chat about the game together. You will have to experiment with this aspect as it proved less interesting to the younger children who tested this game. It requires typing skills.
Less Educational Aspects
Coin Collecting - Children are given points for tasks completed. These points translate into coins which are then used to purchase things from the shops like decorative items and/or outfits. Parents have the option of paying out of pocket for the coins but you are not required to.
Special Features
Travel Journal - All the games played, the countries visited and medals won are collected in a Travel Journal. This makes it easier for children to go directly to the games they previously enjoyed later and also to keep track of their accomplishments..
What Kids Are Saying
Liam, a 6 year old boy who tested the game thought it was fun and that the variety of games within the virtual world were interesting to find and play. He especially liked the Elephant Sanctuary in Africa, where he had to care for an orphaned baby elephant.
