PBS Kids Spectacular Sounds Bingo is a great game to get your child to practice matching letters with their sounds. This game is part of a series of interactive games affiliated with SUPER WHY, the breakthrough preschool TV series designed to help kids ages 3 to 6 with the critical skills that they need to learn to read. SUPER WHY makes reading an empowering adventure by using interactive literacy games that help your child learn while having fun.
Phonics- In this super simple bingo game, narrated by Princess Presto, one of the characters of the educational TV series, your child listens to the sound of a letter along with the word that starts with the letter and then clicks on a box with the correct letter. This uncovers a hidden picture that helps to encourage the child to continue. At the end of the game, the child can print out the hidden picture and collect them.
Persistence - The narrator of the game, Princess Presto, tells the child when they are wrong and right and encourages the child to try again when incorrect.
Mouse Control - This games strengthens the child's ability to control a mouse by encouraging them to click on the boxes containing the correct letters.
Hand Eye Coordination - By having to click on the correct box, your child learns to coordinate what he sees onscreen with fine motor skills.
Less Educational Aspects
Recommendations for Improvement 1- If a child that has not learned the alphabet sounds plays this game, he may get frustrated by getting the answers wrong. It would be nice to the narrator go over all the sounds first before the child begins the game. We encourage parents to go over the sounds of the alphabet prior to starting this game.
Recommendations for Improvement 2- In addition, sometimes it is hard to tell from the sound what letter is the correct answer for letters that sound alike. It would help if there was an animation of lips moving to help distinguish between the sounds.
Levels of Difficulty- It's great that the game offers levels of difficulty which is great for variety as well. There is an Easy Level, a Medium Level and a Hard Level. The Easy Level has only uppercase letters. The Medium Level has only lowercase letters.
Prizes- Also great for motivating your child are the prizes. When your child successfully uncovers a photo, hidden within the bingo board, they are sent to collect a prize where they can pick from a few videos that feature the characters from the TV series, dancing, singing or seemingly speaking directly to your child.
Additional Activities- A great add on, is the Super Stuff button, where you can print Super Why coloring pages, watch videos or listen to music.
Encouragement- Every time your child answers correctly Princess Presto offers words of encouragement, using words like magnificent and spectacular. This helps to motivate the child.
